Could Kirsten Gillibrand Lose in New York?
If you’ve been following the New York Senate polls closely for the last year, you’ve noticed that Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been hovering around 50 percent for most of the past two years. This is dangerous territory for any incumbent to be in – by my count, only three incumbents in the last three years who averaged less than 50 percent in August polling have gone on to win in …

A Hiking Guide to Easter Island, by David Stanley

A Hiking Guide to Easter Island, by David Stanley

Ask me which Pacific island has the most to offer hikers and I’ll probably answer Easter Island. Here on an island 11 km wide and 23 km long you’ll find nearly a thousand ancient Polynesian statues strewn along a powerfully beautiful coastline or littering the slopes of an extinct volcano.

The legends of Easter Island have been recounted many times. What’s less known is that the island’s assorted wonders are easily accessible on foot from the comfort of the only settlement, Hanga Roa. Before setting out see the sights, however, visit the excellent archaeological museum next to Ahu Tahai on the north side of town (the term “ahu” refers to an ancient stone platform). Aside from the exhibits, the museum has maps which can help you plan your trip. An online map is available at http://www.mapsouthpacific.com/easter_island/

The first morning after arrival, I suggest you climb Easter Island’s most spectacular volcano, Rano Kau, where Orongo, a major archaeological site, sits on the crater’s rim. But rather than marching straight up the main road to the crater, look for the unmarked shortcut trail off a driveway to the right just past the forestry station south of town. It takes under two hours to cover the six km from Hanga Roa to Orongo, but bring along a picnic lunch and make a day of it. (If climbing a 316-meter hill sounds daunting, you can take a taxi to the summit for around US and easily walk back later in the day.) Once on top, you’ll find hiking down into the colourful crater presents no difficulty. It may also look easy to go right around the crater rim, but only do so if you’re a very experienced hiker and have a companion along as shear 250-meter cliffs drop into the sea from the ridge.

Another day, rise early and take a taxi to lovely Anakena Beach at the end of the paved road on the north side of the island (you should pay under US for the 20 km). A few of the famous Easter Island statues have been restored at Anakena and you could go for a swim, although the main reason you’ve come is the chance to trek back to Hanga Roa around the road-free northwest corner of the island. You’ll pass numerous abandoned statues lying facedown where they fell, and the only living creatures you’re unlikely to encounter are the small brown hawks which will watch you intently from perches on nearby rocks. If you keep moving, you’ll arrive back in town in five or six hours (but take adequate food, water, and sunscreen). This is probably the finest coastal walk in the South Pacific.

Almost as good is the hike along the south coast, although you’re bound to run into other tourists here as a paved highway follows the shore. Begin early and catch a taxi to Rano Raraku, the stone quarry where all of the island’s statues were born. This is easily the island’s most spectacular sight with 397 statues in various stages of completion lying scattered around the crater. And each day large tour groups come to Rano Raraku to sightsee and have lunch. However, if you arrive before 9 am, you’ll have the site to yourself for a few hours. When you see the first tour buses headed your way, hike down to Ahu Tongariki on the coast, where 15 massive statues were reerected in 1994. From here, just start walking back toward Hanga Roa (20 km) along the south coast. You’ll pass many fallen statues and enjoy some superb scenery. Whenever you get tired, simply go up onto the highway and stick out your thumb and you’ll be back in town in a jiffy.

An outstanding 13-km walk begins at the museum and follows the west coast five km north to Ahu Tepeu. As elsewhere, keep your eyes pealed for banana trees growing out of the barren rocks as these often indicate caves you can explore. Inland from Ahu Tepeu is one of the island’s most photographed sites, Ahu Akivi, with seven statues restored in 1960. From here an interior farm road runs straight back to town (study the maps at the museum carefully, as you’ll go far out of your way if you choose the wrong road here).

A shorter hike takes you up Puna Pau, a smaller crater which provided stone for the red topknots that originally crowned the island’s statues. There’s a great view of Hanga Roa from the three crosses on an adjacent hill and you can easily do it all in half a day. A different walk takes you right around the 3,353-meter airport runway, which crosses the island just south of town. Near the east end of the runway is Ahu Vinapu with perfectly fitted monolithic stonework bearing an uncanny resemblance to similar constructions in Peru.

Easter Island’s moderate climate and scant vegetation make for easy cross country hiking, and you won’t find yourself blocked by fences and private property signs very often. You could also tour the island by mountain bike, available from several locations at US a day. If you surf or scuba dive, there are many opportunities here. A minimum of five days are needed to see the main sights of Easter Island, and two weeks would be far better. The variety of things to see and do will surprise you, and you’ll be blessed with some unforgettable memories.

David Stanley is the author of Moon Handbooks South Pacific which has a chapter on Easter Island. Stanley’s guide to Easter Island and Easter Island travel photos may be perused online.

Photoshop Elements Tools Introducing The Smart Brush by David Peters

Located in the Full Edit area of the Editor, the new Smart Brush tool is a combination of the Quick Selection tool (which was introduced in Elements 6) and adjustment layers, offering a speedy way to adjust, enhance, and add effects to your photos.

When you select the Smart Brush, a Presets menu pops open, showing nearly 70 effects-in nine categories-that can be applied to your photo. Make your choice from the list (we used Dark-Sky in our example, shown below) and simply paint on your image over the area you want the effect to be applied. After you draw an initial selection, the tool automatically switches to the Add to Selection mode, so to add to your affected area, simply continue selecting. To take away part of your selected area, you can use the Subtract from Selection button or hold down Alt on your keyboard and paint away the parts you want to eliminate.

How does it work? If you take a look at the Layers palette, you\’ll see that an adjustment layer was created-in our example, a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer-along with the layer mask that accompanies adjustment layers. The area you selected is shown in white on the mask, thus revealing the effect. The black areas on the mask are hiding the effect.

To edit the effect you have created, you can either double-click the adjustment layer in the Layers palette or you can double-click the red adjustment pin located in your selection on the image. As long as the adjustment layer is one supported by Elements, the dialog box for that adjustment layer will open and you can make any changes you wish.

Please note that some of the presets were created using an adjustment layer found in the full version of Photoshop and not in Elements, so you won\’t be able to edit these effects.

Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding (2003) – Part 5 Cast: David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Michael Bergin, Yasmine Bleeth, Angelica Bridges, Nicole Eggert, Carmen Electra, Jeremy Jackson, Stacy Kamano, Jason Momoa, John Allen Nelson, Gena Lee Nolin, Brande Roderick, Billy Warlock, Alexandra Paul Plot: This Baywatch reunion movie, like the 11-year television series itself, is a guilty pleasure short on story credibility but long on action, hardbody appeal, and hot passions. The hyperdrive plot finds Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff), presumed dead at the end of season 10, alive and well and in love with a woman named Allison (Alexandra Paul), who bears a spooky resemblance to Mitch’s late lover, Stephanie. Wedding plans that include the old Baywatch lifeguard crew (Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Billy Warlock, etc.) are set for Hawaii, but in a Wrath of Khan-like twist, a villain (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) from the old show’s second season turns up with an elaborate plan to kidnap and endanger Mitch’s guests. The script is shameless, of course, but the outre element is fun to watch, including a subplot in which Mitch’s former wife (Gena Lee Nolin)–suspicious of Allison’s true motives–gets into a spectacular catfight with her ex’s new lady. With this hot cast and tempting plot twists, this sizzling Baywatch Hawaiian Wedding delivers the best of Baywatch – adventure, drama and bathing beauties galore! Featuring many of the series’ hottest cast members including David Hasselhoff

Zoltar Speaks
David W. Long

We found this Zoltar Speaks machine outside the arcade on the Santa Monica Pier. The button on the front that is lit up says "Español." The sign above the machine says, "Children Only 70 Lbs. or Less." The coin (bill) slot is labeled 0 although the glass says .00. In the background you can see a Rambo sign next to the Dance Dance Revolution game—it must be a rough game.

Zoltar has a ring on the ring finger of his left hand, but we didn’t see Mrs. Zoltar anywhere nearby. I wonder if the rainbow beads he’s wearing are significant.

Zoltar Speaks machines are 77 inches tall. They come in three sizes: Premium (33"W x 28"D), Standard (27"W x 25"D), and Economy (24"W x 24"D). They are priced at ,500, ,500, and ,500, respectively. Zoltar Speaks comes with 16 pre-recorded messages and you can add as many of your own messages as you’d like. There are 23 different messages that are dispensed on paper cards at the front of the machine. The eyes and jaw move and the crystal ball lights up. On the Standard and Premium models the arm and head move too. You can add breathing animation to any of the models for an additional 0. The only address I could find for the manufacturer was www.zoltarmachine.com/.

The Zoltar Speaks machine was part of the plot in the movie Big (1988). The basic plot goes something like this (from Wikipedia):

After being humiliated while attempting to impress an older teenage girl at a carnival, Josh Baskin (David Moscow) goes to a wish/fortune-telling machine (called Zoltar Speaks) and wishes that he were "big". The next morning, he sees a face in the mirror he does not recognize. Overnight, he has become a 35-year-old man (Tom Hanks). With the help of his 13-year-old best friend, Billy Kopecki (Jared Rushton), Josh rents a cheap room in Manhattan and gets a lowly data-entry job at the MacMillan Toy Company. In a memorable scene, he meets the company’s owner, MacMillan (Robert Loggia), checking out the products at the FAO Schwarz toy store, and impresses him with his childlike enthusiasm. They end up playing a duet together on a Big Piano, a foot-operated electronic keyboard, performing Chopsticks and Heart & Soul. This earns Josh a promotion to a dream job for a kid: testing toys all day long and getting paid for it. He soon attracts the attention of the beautiful, ambitious Susan Lawrence (Elizabeth Perkins), a fellow toy executive. A romance begins to develop, much to the annoyance of her current boyfriend, Paul (John Heard). As Josh becomes more and more entwined in his "adult" life, much to the annoyance of Billy, he soon begins to wish for the carefree life of a child again and becomes determined to find the Zoltar machine to reverse the wish.

The Swedish version of Big was printed on 35mm film and was 2,855 meters long.

In the end credits for Big, Harold ‘Whitey’ McEvoy was the Transportation Captain. I’ve heard people say, "Never trust Whitey," but I don’t know why—maybe he’s a bad driver.

Also in the end credits for Big, Elizabeth Shelton was the Assistant to the Costume Designer. This was not my aunt Elizabeth Shelton; it was a different one.

The person who hired Danny Irom for the crew must have stuttered. Mr. Irom was the Second Second Assistant Director.

In the credits "FAO Schwarz" (the toy store) is misspelled as "FAO Schwartz" ("t" added).

Review: Inside Obama’s Afghan war room
It’s no secret that there have been ferocious arguments within the Obama administration over the war in Afghanistan: both substantive policy debates, encouraged by the president during meetings as a means of fully exploring military and diplomatic options; and nasty public exchanges and orchestrated leaks from the Pentagon and White House, exposing rifts over America’s mission and strategy there …
